With Jaren Jackson Jr. getting traded to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, all eyes are on Ja Morant’s move out of Memphis. The Timberwolves have been linked to the two-time All-Star as one of his most prominent suitors, but didn’t catch significant heat after Giannis Antetokounmpo was reportedly made available for a trade.
Minutes after NBA insider Shams Charania reported Jackson’s trade, another rumor went viral, suggesting Morant had been traded to the Timberwolves. However, the post was from a parody account named “NBA Centel.” The tweet garnered up to 510,000 impressions, 265 comments and 295 retweets, leaving many confused whether Morant’s move to Minnesota was finalized.
Moreover, another report from Bulls insider K.C. Johnson suggested that the Timberwolves had agreed to a trade sending Mike Conley to Chicago, which further fueled rumors that Ja Morant landed in Minnesota.
The Timberwolves are one of the teams in need of a starting point guard. Donte DiVincenzo is a decent piece but not a primary playmaker. Anthony Edwards is shouldering most of that burden, so Minnesota is scouting its options.
Ja Morant’s trade value continues to fall as Grizzlies look to enter full rebuild
Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. were the only players left on the Grizzlies core that led the team to the conference semis in 2022. After Jackson left, Morant’s days presumably numbered. The Grizzlies are reportedly wasting no time in wiping the slate clean to rebuild with a younger core around Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and others.
According to the latest NBA trade rumors from Jake Fischer, the Grizzlies have lowered their asking price for Morant in an attempt to move him at Thursday’s trade deadline.
With Jackson and Bane fetching a combined seven first-round picks in six months for the Grizzlies, Memphis will likely be open to moving Morant without draft capital as compensation. At this point, taking on expiring or swapping bad contracts is the best way for the Grizzlies.
