Darius Acuff Jr. has often shared that his childhood idol and biggest basketball influence is Allen Iverson. He has modeled much of his game, including his offensive approach, efficient scoring and heart, around Iverson.
Acuff appeared on the “Run It Back podcast” along with his former coach John Calipari on June 25. He explained how important Iverson has been in his growth as a superstar.
Lou Williams, who was also inspired by AI, asked Acuff how his relationship with the NBA legend has developed over the years.
“It happened at his classic game,” acuff recalled. “That was kind of the week I announced that I would sign for Reebok. And they gave me the Player of the Year, I got the MVP that game. Throughout that whole week, he just kept it a 100. He keeps it a 100 with you, that’s why I respect him so much.
“He just told me to go out there and be a dog first and play every game like it’s your last. When you look back on his career, that’s how he played. So for him to tell that to me was just a blessing. But over the years, he’s just been a great role model to me. I’ll look up to him for sure,” he added.
How will Darius Acuff Jr help the Sacramento Kings?
The Sacramento Kings selected Darius Acuff with the No. 7 pick in the 2026 NBA draft. The Arkansas guard had an impressive one-and-done season under John Calipari. He averaged 23.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.4 assists in 36 games.
He can provide the Kings with elite scoring and efficient three-point shooting. Under Calipari, he proved to be a good ball handler with effective pick-and-roll skills. Acuff can combine with Russell Westbrook, DeMar DeRozan and Alex Karaban to create a fast-paced offense in Sacramento.
