The Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off one of the biggest trades in recent memory on Wednesday, landing LaMelo Ball in a blockbuster deal that saw Naz Reid and multiple assets heading the other way.
ESPN’s Shams Charania first broke the news, and here are the details of the trade:
- The Minnesota Timberwolves receive: LaMelo Ball and Josh Green
- The Charlotte Hornets receive: Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps (2028, 2029, 2030), and three second-round picks (2029, 2032, 2033)
While the trade is going to sting Charlotte fans for a long time, it is time to start looking ahead as the LaMelo Ball era for the Hornets is officially over.
The deal sees the Timberwolves add a much-needed, highly skilled star who can instantly play alongside Anthony Edwards. For the Hornets, it allows them to sell high on a player and build a team around Kon Knueppel and others while acquiring some intriguing pieces that should help in the future.
With this in mind, here is what Minnesota’s fully healthy lineup could look like as of now:
- PG: LaMelo Ball
- SG: Anthony Edwards
- SF: Ayo Dosunmu
- PF: Jaden McDaniels
- C: Rudy Gobert
Ball has spent the majority of his NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets. Over his 303 career games, the 24-year-old guard has averaged 20.8 points and 7.3 assists on 41.8% shooting from the field. The 2025-26 season was a major milestone for him, as he played over 70 games – his highest appearance count since his sophomore run.
What LaMelo Ball Will Bring to the Timberwolves
The addition of LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves should help kick-start the offense for a new era. The former rookie of the year brings elite, generational playmaking to the Timberwolves.
Minnesota already has a reliable 30-point player in Edwards, yet the team is currently struggling to push beyond the conference finals in a stacked Western Conference. However, adding a player of Ball’s caliber could provide a strong complementary presence in the backcourt, helping to stretch the floor and expand the offense. This would allow Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert to anchor the frontcourt, potentially restoring the Timberwolves to the formidable level where they reached the Western Conference Finals twice.
The Timberwolves are in clear win-now mode as they look to capitalize heavily on the Edwards window, and bringing LaMelo Ball into the picture completely changes their trajectory. It is a staggering trade at a pivotal point in this franchise’s competitive window.
