Anthony Davis has had some of the most difficult months of his NBA career since he was traded by the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks in February 2025. After spending a season filled with injuries, the Mavs once again moved him to the Washington Wizards as the team aimed to lower its salary cap. But does he have some other plans now?
In a latest update on X, NBA Central shared Davis’ plans for the future and what the 10-time NBA All-Star was up to for next season. As per Josh Robbins of The Athletic:
“Davis reiterated Monday that he wants to have in-depth conversations with Monumental Basketball president Michael Winger and Wizards general manager Will Dawkins over the next few months to learn whether team officials have a concrete plan to compete for a championship either next season or during the 2027-28 season.”
Davis’ statement comes as he is nursing a hand injury he suffered this season. He played just 20 games for the Mavericks this season and has yet to suit up for the Wizards. Given the Wizards’ young lineup, the team might not be eyeing an immediate championship run. However, with Trae Young also in the capital now, the team might look for a playoff run next season, if players remain healthy.
Can Anthony Davis rejoin the Lakers?
Even though the Lakers acquired Deandre Ayton in the offseason, looking to add a lob threat with Luka Doncic, the move has not turned out perfectly. The center did show some signs of elite big, but his consistency has been an issue. No doubt, fans might be missing a versatile center/forward in Anthony Davis.
Davis led the franchise in both points and rebounds in the 2024-25 season. He was a crucial piece in the team’s playoff run. However, given the kind of contract James, Doncic, and soon Reaves demand, the salary cap would be a serious hurdle if the management considers another move for Davis.
Davis is due $58.5 million next season, but giving that kind of money to another player won’t be possible for the Lakers unless they decide to relieve one of the Big 3. Given the impact Doncic has had, the franchise might not move him anytime soon. James is a perennial All-Star and can do some things on the court that make him one of the greatest.
That leaves the option of Reaves, who has been a Lakers loyalist. Several fans’ sentiments are connected with the shooting guard. For now, it looks like a far-fetched possibility. However, anything is possible in the league as far as the business side of the NBA is concerned. Moreover, he is still in a good relationship with most of the Lakers players, as was seen during the Wizards’ last game against the Lakeshow.
