The LA Clippers gave fans plenty to talk about this season, particularly their impressive 36-19 turnaround after a rough 6-21 start. Another major storyline came early in the season, when the team abruptly released Chris Paul.
After the Clippers were knocked out in the play-in tournament, ending their playoff hopes sooner than expected, Blake Griffin added a bit of humor to the situation. He took a light jab at head coach Ty Lue, suggesting that the early exit might finally give everyone a chance to address things with Paul.
“Ty Lue got some time on his hands to finally meet with Chris Paul, so congrats CP,” Griffin said.
Paul also took a not-so-subtle jab at the Clippers, sharing a popular funeral meme on social media following their loss to the Warriors.
Chris Paul had announced that the 2025-2026 season would be his last before retiring. Hence, it seemed appropriate for him to finish his career with the Clippers, the team where he had some of his best years.
But things didn’t play out that way. Reports suggested there was tension between Paul and the coaching staff, including Ty Lue and Jeff Van Gundy. This led the team to ultimately part ways with him instead.
Chris Paul snubbed LA Clippers as “best organization” he ever played for
Across his 21-year NBA career, Chris Paul spent most of his prime with the LA Clippers. During his six seasons (2011-2017) there, he put up elite numbers, averaging 18.8 points, 9.8 assists, and 2.2 steals per game. He also helped lead the franchise to the playoffs every year he was on the roster, including three trips to the Western Conference semifinals.
Later in his career, Paul often jumped ships, representing six different teams from the 2017-18 season onward. One of those stops came with the San Antonio Spurs during the 2024-25 season, which ended up being the final full season of his career.
By that stage, Paul was no longer the same player statistically, averaging 8.8 points and 7.4 assists per game. However, he had nothing but praise for the Spurs, calling them the best organization he ever played for, a notable statement considering how much of his career was spent with the LA Clippers.
“It’s so dope because the Spurs gave me this last year, my best organization I played for,” Paul said while talking about a memento the Spurs presented to him after he moved into second place on the NBA’s all-time assists list.
