Tony Stewart candidly explains what makes the Chili Bowl brutal than the Daytona 500 race

Tony Stewart delved into the differences that contrast the Daytona 500 and the Chili Bowl Nationals. The two-time Chili Bowl champion explained how a driver ‘can’t afford to make a mistake’ in the high-paced midget racing feature.

Stewart has been bestowed with the honour of Grand Marshal for the event, having made 12 starts with three podiums and seven top-10s. Set to take place at Tulsa Expo Raceway, the event has garnered 400 entries, making it an all-time record.

In a promotional video for FloRacing, Stewart outlined the crucial aspects of the dirt racing feature. He began by highlighting the versatility of the competition, noting how a crown jewel event like the Daytona 500 features a mostly set field, while the Chili Bowl attracts drivers from various disciplines.

“The thing with the Dayton 500,” Tony stewart said, “You really don’t care where you qualify because you’ve got 500 miles to get there. The Chili Bowl literally your heat race is probably one of the most important events that you’re going around the whole weekend because the points you get in that are going to seed you for the qualifier and that’s going to seed you for your mains for the preliminary night.”

“There’s so many good drivers and teams out there that you really can’t afford to make a mistake. The Daytona 500, you can have a bad pit stop, you can get a pit road speeding penalty and you can recover from it. It is very hard to recover from a mistake at the Chili,” he added.

JGR driver Christopher Bell echoed the sentiment in another promo. Bell will be competing at the Chili Bowl Nationals, alongside other NASCAR drivers like Kyle Larson, Ty Gibbs, Jesse Love, Sheldon Creed and Corey Day.

FloRacing’s website will live stream the 2026 Chili Bowl Nationals, including the official opening ceremonies for Championship Saturday at 6:30 PM on January 17.
