“Shane Van Gisbergen sheds light on Austin Hill Interaction After NASCAR Meeting For Chicagoland Run-In: “He Threatened That”

Shane van Gisbergen shared scathing details from his NASCAR meeting with Austin Hill after their Chicagoland clash. The Trackhouse driver called it a ‘weird’ interaction that ended with a threat of retaliation.

Van Gisbergen and Hill had a contentious back and forth during last Sunday’s eero 400. SVG initially took out Hill when he tagged his rear in a high-speed corner.

The contact sent Hill spinning into the outside walls, and the RCR driver made sure to retaliate during caution. NASCAR reporter Steven Taranto shared SVG’s take on the NASCAR meeting that followed.

“It was weird dynamic in the meeting and weird way how it ended,” van Gisbergen said, “I think what’s been cool about this sport, you can kind of sort it out yourselves and then I guess it gets to that point. To me it’s at that point, but to him it’s not. He’s the kind of personality, I guess, who feels like he’s got to get the last laugh or the last one to strike. And he threatened that, I guess.”

“I guess he’s on his own agenda….I know where I’m at with it, I want to move on. But he’s not at the point.” SVG added.

Shane van Gisbergen bore the brunt of Austin Hill’s driving at Sonoma as well. The road course ringer was battling for the lead when Hill missed a corner and caused a multi-car wreck.

Team owner Richard Childress believes Chicagoland was van Gisbergen’s payback for Sonoma. Dale Earnhardt Jr. commented on the situation and explained how it’s easy to place the onus on SVG without proper evidence.

NASCAR Cup Series managing director Brad Moran went over Shane van Gisbergen’s run-in with Austin Hill in a recent interview with SiriusXM. He revealed why the sanctioning body refused to penalise the two drivers.

“We include everything from telemetry to radio communication, all vintage footage, race data, everything we have before we get in the middle of what really happened inside the race car. And there just wasn’t enough evidence there to say the incident was intentional,” he said.

Shane van Gisbergen and Austin Hill’s rivalry goes back to Pocono this year. Hill forced a three-wide situation at Turn 3 and caused a stack-up that took out multiple Chase hopefuls, including SVG, Josh Berry, and Joey Logano.

Their first-ever on-track feud began in the 2024 O’Reilly race at Circuit of the Americas. Hill shoved SVG wide, and the latter used his bumper to dump Hill in Turn 15. Ultimately, they both fell out of contention and allowed Kyle Larson to claim victory.
