    “Why Not Yaxel?”: Fans Left Confused As Dusty May Reunites With Michigan’s Morez Johnson Jr. at Dallas Mavericks

    Weeks after winning the men’s college basketball national championship, the Michigan Wolverines are now continuing the celebrations as Morez Johnson Jr. was selected ninth overall by his former head coach, Dusty May.

    However, this came as a surprise as the Dallas Mavericks were tipped to select Yaxel Lendeborg in several mock drafts. Moreover, Johnson Jr. was in line to be the third selection amongst the Michigan group behind both Lendeborg and Aday Mara.

    As the Dallas pick became official, reuniting Morez Johnson Jr. with Dusty May, fans took to social media to make their opinions known.

    While the consensus among fans remained that Lendeborg should’ve been picked at No. 9, age could’ve been a possible differentiator between the two. Lendeborg is 23 years old, while Johnson is the younger prospect at 20. Johnson also fits in better age-wise with Dallas star Cooper Flagg.

    Yaxel Lendeborg Speaks Out on Dusty May’s Mavericks Move

    While Lendeborg is not a part of Michigan’s roster anymore, the reigning national champion was left in tears finding out about Dusty May’s unexpected switch to the pros just weeks after ending Michigan’s 37-year title drought.

    During an interview with NBA Media on Monday, Lendeborg revealed his initial reaction to the move, saying:

    “I know I’m not playing there next year, but I felt heartbroken. I’m happy for him. He deserves it, he’s a really good coach, really good guy.”

    Lendeborg transferred to Michigan after spending two years at UAB, and was a pivotal part of the Wolverines’ national championship run. The 23-year-old also played three years of JUCO basketball with Arizona Western prior to his UAB days.
