Point Guard Rob Wright III briefly entered the transfer portal after the 2025-26 season. However, after exploring his options, he decided to return for another season with the BYU Cougars.
On Tuesday, Wright made an appearance on “BYU Sports Nation” after his decision to return. While explaining the reasoning behind his decision, the point guard seemingly revealed about rejecting an offer from a coach.
“I talked to coaches in BYU,” Wright said. “They kind of encouraged me to kind of just enter and see. And then, ultimately, I just wanted to play for KY (Kevin Young). I didn’t think I wanted to play for another coach. I came here, I was a transfer student. And they really just embraced me. So, I was just super appreciative of that. It was really a big thought going through my mind. I didn’t know if I wanted to go to a new place and experience something else when I had a great year here, on and off the court.”
Rob Wright was reportedly scheduled for a visit with the Kentucky Wildcats. After being eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament during the 2025-26 season, coach Mark Pope has been revamping the roster.
However, things have not been going in favor of the Wildcats. Apart from Wright, ex-Syracuse star Donnie Freeman also decided to transfer to St. John’s instead of playing for Pope’s team.
Rob Wright spent his freshman campaign with the Baylor Bears. He transferred to play for BYU as a sophomore. The point guard played in 35 games and averaged 18.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. They qualified for March Madness but were eliminated by Texas in the first round.
Rob Wright III gets honest about his relationship with BYU coach Kevin Young
During the interview, Rob Wright was also questioned about his bond with BYU coach Kevin Young. The point guard revealed that the coach supported him throughout the entire transfer portal situation.
“Me and him (Kevin Young) were talking a lot throughout the process,” Wright said. “He always told me he got my back no matter what decision I chose to do. Just kind of talking to him, our relationship has grown a lot throughout the years. Last year, I just got here, so we were kind of just figuring each other out. Then, towards the end of the year, we really started clicking. So I just feel like coming into this year, we’ll be a lot stronger and on the same page.”
Kevin Young took over as the BYU coach in 2024 after Mark Pope left for Kentucky. In two seasons, he has put up a 49-22 record while making the NCAA Tournament both times.
