LSU is on a rebuild yet again with Will Wade making his return to Baton Rouge after he was fired for some recruiting controversies.
With a new coach, some changes are to be expected and some players have already announced their entry into the transfer portal soon after a disastrous season left the Tigers in last place in the super-competitive SEC. While the women’s team has remained relevant, the men’s could not catch up.
So far, five players have announced their exit from the program and have now entered the transfer portal. These include two big star players and several role players, with more exits expected to happen in the days to come.
As for the transfer portal itself, it is expected to open on April 7 and close on April 21, with Will Wade possibly dipping into the transfer portal himself to make up for the losses.
LSU Basketball Transfer Portal: Players Leaving Baton Rouge
- Matt Gilhool – Freshman power forward
- Mazi Mosley – Freshman shooting guard
- Ron Zipper – Freshman shooting guard
- Jalen Reed – Senior power forward
- Dedan Thomas – Junior point guard
All five players are still technically with LSU but are expected to leave once the transfer portal opens and they find a new team. The biggest names to be expected to be leaving are senior power forward Jalen Reed and junior point guard Dedan Thomas, who have been two of the best players for the Tigers this season.
At 6-foot-10, Reed was an anchor in the paint for the Tigers where he averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. However, the biggest loss for LSU would be Dedan Thomas, who averaged 15.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game this season.
He is the team’s second-best scorer and is their playmaker, facilitating plays and knows how to find the open man or a cutting wing for the score.
Another big loss would be their three freshmen, who despite not playing much, could have been great for future development. Matt Gilhool did not play much at all this year, as Reed received the most minutes for any power forward, while Mazi Moseley and Ron Zipper also had limited minutes in their freshman season.
Entering the transfer portal could mean that they will be looking for a program where they could get more playing time.
