Things are not going as planned for Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats. They have lost some crucial games recently. There have been doubts about Pope’s ability to continue at Kentucky amid a hot-and-cold season so far.
The squad is worth around $22 million. With that much investment in recruiting and NIL, fans expected Kentucky to be a team that would challenge for the national championship. But they are far from it right now.
Mark Pope recruited some serious talent this season. High-profile freshmen included Jasper Johnson, Malachi Moreno, and Braydon Hawthorne. Kentucky also brought in some quality players like Jayden Quaintance, Jaland Lowe, Denzel Aberdeen, Kam Williams, and Mouhamed Dioubate.
Despite these additions, Kentucky has struggled. In their defense, they have also struggled with a lot of injuries throughout the season. A recent video of Kentucky players chanting before the 80-55 loss to Vanderbilt infuriated fans even more.
“Kentucky is selfish, lazy, unmotivated, can’t shoot, can’t defend, can’t pass, can’t rebound, poorly coached, and costs $22 million. And then they proceeded to yell ‘touch money’ before the game started. I guess we see the priorities of this program,” one fan posted on his X account in frustration.”
The phrase “touch money” means to always keep your money nearby. Due to that phrase, fans online were furious with the Kentucky side.
“Would be genuinely curious to see how many guys that have asked >x amount of dollars have panned out. I don’t have a good feel of a number to plug in for x, but it seems coaches have gone away from actually building a roster and are just going after 4 guys that averaged 20 a game the year prior. You simply cannot make it work, there’s only one basketball,” one fan explained.
“Won’t watch them anymore,” another fan said.
“I didn’t know what ‘touch money’ meant because I’m not cool and old. Google says successfully obtaining money, often through quick, sneaky, or slightly dishonest means, such as gambling, borrowing, or scamming. I’m. Pissed,” another commented.
“Is it still Cal’s fault?” another fan asked sarcastically.
“Regardless of the intention of what is being said and done in this video (I can’t know what is running through their heads), they should know that right now, no fan or supporter of their team wants to see this. It’s a bad look,” one fan claimed.
“What happened to the game we loved?” another fan sadly wondered.
Mark Pope and Kentucky’s Recent Form and Upcoming Games
Fans might have had enough of Kentucky’s inconsistency, but before they lost 80-55 to Vanderbilt, Kentucky won five games in a row. However, their losses to Michigan State, UNC, Gonzaga, Alabama, and Missouri were disappointing and did not help their reputation.
Kentucky will next face its former head coach, John Calipari, and his Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday. The Razorbacks are in a slightly better situation right now, and Calipari returning to his former team and Mark Pope, whom he respects and supports as his successor, will be an amazing showdown.
