Dillon Mitchell and the St. John’s Red Storm are heading to the Sweet 16 in this year’s NCAA Tournament. On Sunday, they secured a second-round 67-65 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks, thanks to Dylan Darling’s buzzer-beater.
After the game, the fourth-year small forward, Mitchell, appeared on the “The Field of 68” show. During this interview with analyst Jeff Goodman, Mitchell was asked for his thoughts on facing ACC Player of the Year Cameron Boozer and the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet 16.
“That’s gonna be exciting,” Mitchell said (2:45). “Another exciting opportunity. This is the best time to play in March. This is why I came to St. John’s. Took some time. I made it to the Elite Eight in my first year. There’s no better feeling than keep trying to advance and play during this time. Playing against another blue blood with Duke coming up, we got to get home, get some rest.”
Dillon Mitchell played for 35 minutes during their second-round victory over the Kansas Jayhawks. He put up eight points with nine rebounds, one steal, and one block. The small forward transferred to play for Rick Pitino’s team after spending last season with the Cincinnati Bearcats. In 35 games this season, he’s averaged 8.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game.
Mitchell spent the first two years of his collegiate career with the Texas Longhorns. He made the NCAA Tournament both times and averaged 6.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game in 72 appearances.
Last season, Mitchell competed in the College Basketball Crown and made the quarterfinals with Cincinnati. He averaged 9.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 1.7 apg.

I don’t even have words. Just speechless, just happy. Blessed to be at this opportunity and play for coach Pit, play with these guys. Now we’re heading to the Sweet 16.”
