Who is Presiding Over Aden Holloway’s Case? Judge’s Background Explored as Charles Bediako Shadow Looms Large

Alabama Crimson Tide star Aden Holloway’s legal case gets an interesting update ahead of the team’s NCAA Tournament run. According to reports, Joanne Jannik has been assigned to this case.

Tuscaloosa News’ Emilee Smarr has shared more details about the district court judge assigned to Holloway’s case. Jannik completed her BS from Southern Mississippi and is a master’s alum from the University of Alabama.

“Tuscaloosa district court judge Joanne Jannik has been assigned to Alabama guard Aden Holloway’s case. Jannik received her BS from Southern Mississippi, her master’s from the University of Alabama, and her JD from Birmingham School of Law,” Smarr tweeted.

This link to the University has thus raised questions about whether the ruling will be unbiased, in Aden Holloway’s case. A similar situation recently occurred in Alabama center Charles Bediako’s eligibility case.

After spending time in the NBA G League, he made headlines with his attempt to return to play out his collegiate eligibility with the Crimson Tide. Initially, the NCAA refused this request, but Bediako filed a lawsuit to plead his case.

In January, Bediako was granted a temporary restraining order by a judge, allowing him to play for Alabama. However, it was later reported that the judge was Jim Roberts, a massive donor to the University.

No such connections have come out in Aden Holloway’s case so far. He was arrested on Monday after at least one pound of marijuana was found in his possession. Police believe he had the intention of distribution, resulting in charges of first-degree possession and failure to affix a tax stamp.

The Alabama player was released on a $5,000 bond later on the same day.

Alabama Coach Nate Oats Suspends Aden Holloway Amid Pending Investigation

The Crimson Tide has decided to suspend Aden Holloway indefinitely amid the ongoing investigation. On Monday’s episode of the “Hey Coach” radio show, Nate Oats addressed the situation ahead of their March Madness run.

“We’ve got our standards in our program,” Oats said (via AL.com). “We’ve got our ways, we’ve held our guys accountable. … We had to suspend him pending the investigation by the UA office of student conduct.”

“We’re disappointed in his behavior. With that said, we still love him. He’s still our guy. We’re going to get him the help that he needs, and we’re going to continue to help him in whatever way we can,” he added.

Aden Holloway spent his freshman campaign with the Auburn Tigers. He transferred to join Alabama last season. In two years in Tuscaloosa, he’s played in 65 games and averaged 13.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

Alabama enters this year’s NCAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Midwest region. They face Hofstra in the first round on Friday at 3:15 p.m. ET.
