On Jan. 24, reports surfaced that Ohio State Buckeyes standout wide receiver Jeremiah Smith received a $4.5 million offer to enter the transfer portal. On3Sports and college sports transfer portal analyst Pete Nakos broke the news via X, formerly Twitter.
Smith recently won a national championship with the Buckeyes and was named the No. 1 true freshman on CFN’s list of Top 100 True Freshmen from 2024. Smith still has multiple years of eligibility before he can officially declare for the NFL Draft.
Jeremiah Smith’s Transfer Portal Offer
As outlined, ‘On3Sports’ has revealed that Smith has reportedly been offered $4.5 million to enter the transfer portal this year, something that would result in the talented wide receiver leaving Ohio State ahead of next season.
“NEW: Ohio State is working to retain its top talent after winning the national championship… Jeremiah Smith has a $4.5M+ offer and Carnell Tate has a $1M+ offer to enter the transfer portal, @PeteNakos_ reports,” the outlet posted.
Jeremiah Smith’s Standout Freshman Season
Smith had a phenomenal debut season with the Buckeyes, quickly becoming one of the most exciting prospects in college football. In 2024, he recorded:
- 76 receptions
- 1,315 receiving yards
- 15 receiving touchdowns
His dominant performance has already drawn the attention of NFL scouts
In our recent All-Eligible 2025 NFL Mock Draft, Smith was selected No. 1 overall by the Tennessee Titans, he’s potentially that special.
“Jeremiah Smith is one of the best overall WR prospects we’ve ever seen and would easily be the WR1 in the 2025 and 2026 NFL Draft classes (he isn’t eligible until 2027).
Due to his frame (6’3″, 215 pounds), physical style, and ability to threaten defenses vertically, Smith has already been compared to future NFL Hall of Famer Julio Jones.
The scary part? Jones’ best season with Alabama was his last (78 catches, 1,133 yards, 7 TDs)—Smith has a chance to dwarf those numbers in his first year on the collegiate stage.
Smith can win before the catch with his elite start-stop ability, decisive route running, and deceptive speed. He can win at the catch point with his body control, strong hands, and leaping prowess. And he can win after the catch with lateral agility, contact balance, and rapid acceleration. What’s not to like?”

After a breakout freshman campaign, Ohio State will do everything possible to retain Smith and prevent him from entering the transfer portal.
