Wyndham Clark has admitted he feels frustrated about how Brooks Koepka was able to return to the PGA Tour after spending time with LIV Golf. The U.S. Open champion said the situation has made him question how other players might have handled their own decisions if this option had been clear earlier.
Clark shared his thoughts on Wednesday during an appearance on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio’s Gravy and the Sleaze show. He revealed that he received an offer from LIV Golf in 2024, a year after winning the U.S. Open.
“And if you would have told me that I could have gone for a year-and-a-half, make a boatload of money and then be able to come back, play on the tour, I think almost everyone would have done that,” Clark said.
He added that the situation could now influence how some players approach their futures.
“So it’s a little frustrating that happened,” he said. “Are people going to now see what the tour has done and then go do that anyways? You know, they reach out to LIV and say, ‘Hey, I want to come play LIV,’ knowing that hey, you go take a bag for a year or two and you’re able to come back.”
Clark suggested that Koepka’s case could open the door for others to test the system.
“I think there could be guys that have that mindset and kind of challenge the system and then come back and say, ‘Well, you let Brooks do this, why can’t I do it?’”
Despite his frustration, Clark said he has no personal issues with Koepka and understands why the Tour would want a player of his caliber back.
“I personally really like Brooks, and I think it’s ultimately really good for the PGA Tour. But also … it’s kind of frustrating that he’s able to get the cake and also eat it,” Clark said. “I don’t know. I’m very torn.”
He added that while Koepka’s return could help the Tour, he still wishes there had been stricter consequences.
“At the end of the day, I want whatever’s best for the PGA Tour. If guys come back, especially top players like Brooks, it’s only going to help the Tour which is only going to help me. I wish maybe there was a few more repercussions.”
Koepka is set to return to the PGA Tour in two weeks at the Farmers Insurance Open under the new Returning Member Program. While the move comes with heavy financial penalties and limits on which events he can enter at first, he is the first major star to make the jump back after playing for LIV Golf.
When Wyndham Clark explained who should be allowed back on the PGA Tour
“It depends on who it is. Guys that have had the career where they should be lifelong PGA Tour players, they deserve the right to come play the PGA Tour,” Clark said.
“If Dustin Johnson wants to come back and Phil Mickelson and guys that have won, Brooks, who have won majors and are most likely Hall of Famers, they deserve to play wherever the hell they want, because they’re so good.”
