Rory McIlroy’s consistency in the game has earned him widespread praise in the golf world. The World No. 2 has competed all over the world on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour, yet despite his extensive participation, the golfer has some crazy statistics regarding tournament withdrawals. These statistics began to surface on the internet after he recently withdrew his name from the 2026 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

During the third round of the 2026 Arnold Palmer Invitational, Rory McIlroy revealed that he had a massive muscular spasm in his back and was unable to continue. The golfer complained that a minor twinge began in the morning, but as he began hitting the warm-up balls, things went a little wrong for him. This made the career grand slam winner take his name back only 30 minutes before his round 3 was supposed to begin.

Later, McIlroy explained the situation by stating,

“While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back. As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back. Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.”

This marked only the second withdrawal of Rory McIlroy in his entire 18-year-long career. Since turning professional in 2007, the first tournament McIlroy took his name back from was the 2013 Honda Classic, when, despite being 7 under par, the golfer was unable to continue owing to a serious toothache he got, which was reported to be due to a wisdom tooth.

Since withdrawing from the 2026 Arnold Palmer Invitational, questions over Rory McIlroy’s future schedule have grown significantly. The Players Championship, one of the largest tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule, is quickly approaching, and McIlroy is supposed to enter as the defending champion. His participation in the tournament is currently uncertain because nothing about his injury has been revealed as of yet.

Although Rory McIlroy’s manager Sean O’Flaherty discussed the golfer’s current situation and stated that he will be receiving treatment in the coming days, it will be revealed what his future schedule will be. According to The Sun, Flaherty stated,

“Nothing more to add. He’ll get treatment over the coming days and will know more then.”

The Players Championship will be starting on March 12 at the PGA Tour headquarters, TPC Sawgrass, with a total prize pool of $25 million, one of the richest for the circuit.
