As Jedd Fisch prepares for a new season with the Washington Huskies, the head coach has opened up about the influences in his past that led him to prepare his current crop of players. His rich history of working with coaches who have excelled at the NFL level seems to have seeped into the way he handles his own teams now, and he wasn’t afraid to name the ones who left the biggest impact on him.
Speaking on the “Triple Option Podcast” with legendary college football coach Urban Meyer, Fisch named coaches such as Sean McVay, Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick, whose impact can be seen on the way he sets up his Washington players today.
“Offensively, we are probably most similar to what we did with (Sean) McVay and (Kyle) Shanahan,” Fisch said. “Probably culturally we have a little bit more (Jim) Harbaugh, (Bill) Belichick, kinda mixing all of it together. Probably Sean’s my No. 1 influence. I thought we had good years together, and I’ve known him for so long that I really believe that the way he runs his program is elite, so we kinda are similar to that.”
Jedd Fisch Opens Up About the Demond Williams Controversy
Demond Williams almost left the Washington Huskies during the transfer portal, and Fisch explained on the “Triple Option” podcast about how things almost went south during that time.
“We all came back for our first team meeting, and then when the team meeting ended, he called me and said, ‘Coach, I think I need to go into the portal,’” Fisch said about the moment.
“And I was like, ‘What are you talking about, man?’ What happened was: a program told him that they’d pay him an extra $2 million if he goes in the portal. The kid’s 19 years old and we’re paying him a lot, but if you add another $2 million onto anything… he was forced to put something out there.
“We spent about 24-36 hours going back and forth and talking about, ‘This is the right place for you, and you have a contract, and contracts mean something. In the end, he came back two days later. We didn’t change anything; we didn’t give him any more money or anything like that, but what we did do is we talked about what a great opportunity it is to be a three-year player in the same program, and we have a chance to do something super special.”
