MLB Hot Stove: Yankees Urged To Sign $13,500,000 Ex-Dodgers Reliever; Crosstown Rivals Turn Up Heat On Freddy Peralta

The New York Yankees are reportedly on the lookout for pitching additions this offseason after the departure of relief pitchers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver in free agency.

With the Yankees in need of reliable arms to bolster the bullpen, MLB insider John Jastremski urged the Bronx Bombers to sign former Los Angeles Dodger reliever Michael Kopech (who is projected to receive a $13.5 million contract) this offseason.

In a conversation with SNY’s Eamon McAnaney, the MLB insider said (2:40 onwards):

“The Yankees have a lot of work to do in that bullpen…Michael Kopech, go back to the World Series a couple of years ago. I know he is hurt all the time, the guy throws absolute smoke; he can go multiple innings… You might as well go and take a guy who’s won a world championship a couple of years ago. Give me Kopech in the Yankees bullpen.”

Kopech arrived in Los Angeles after a trade from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline in July 2024. He helped the NL West team to the World Series later that season. The 29-year-old reliever is projected to earn a $13,500,000 contract in free agency after missing the majority of the 2025 season due to a knee injury.

Yankees Are Facing Competition From Crosstown Rivals, the Mets, for Freddy Peralta

While the Yankees have been urged to add Michael Kopech to the bullpen, the AL East franchise is looking to strengthen the starting rotation by signing Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta.

However, the Yankees are facing competition from crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, over a potential trade for the two-time All-Star pitcher, who is also attracting interest from the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and the Atlanta Braves.

The Boston Red Sox were also reportedly interested in Peralta this offseason. However, the Red Sox landed former Philadelphia Phillies ace Ranger Suarez on a reported five-year, $130 million deal this week, seemingly ending their pursuit of the Brewers ace.
