“Say Goodbye to Freddy Peralta”; “High Key Fire Move” – Fans React As Yankees Acquire Ryan Weathers In Trade With Marlins

The New York Yankees have acquired Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins in a trade. In exchange for the left-hander, the Yankees have sent four minor league prospects, outfielders Dillon Lewis and Brendan Jones, and infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus. The deal gives the Yankees rotational depth since several of their starting pitchers will be sidelined to begin the 2026 season.

Weathers, a former No. 7 pick, pitched for Miami after being traded there in 2023. Last season, he posted a 3.99 ERA and struck out 37 in eight starts.

Fans are assuming that this trade means the end of the Yankees’ pursuit of Milwaukee Brewers’ Freddy Peralta.

“Say goodbye to Freddy Peralta, pretty good move nonetheless,” one fan commented.

“high key fire move. weathers has stuff,” another fan added.

“i’ve never seen this dude before LOL,” one fan wrote.

“Wow good job Yankees we are doing great! But fr tf are we doing,” one fan asked.

“No Cabrera, no Sandy but Weathers? 💀” one fan was shocked.

“Dumpster diving masterclass this offseason,” one fan added.

How Does Ryan Weathers Fit With Yankees?

The Yankees have certainities in their starting rotation to begin the 2026 season. Key starters Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón are recovering from surgery, and Clarke Schmidt is still rehabbing. That leaves some holes to fill in the early part of the season. That’s where Ryan Weathers would come in and stabilize the rotation.

The lefty has experience pitching both as a starter and a reliever. H’s under team control for multiple years. If he stays healthy, he could compete for an Opening Day rotation spot. Weathers is expected to start multiple innings or move to the bullpen as needed. The Yankees would want him to eat innings, spot start, and bridge from starter to bullpen.

If Weathers falters as a starter, the Yankees also have the option to make him pitch out of the bullpen as and when required. However, Weathers could be on the rotation featuring Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, Will Warren and Ryan Yarbrough.
