New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez was stunned when he called for an ABS challenge, only to be denied by home plate umpire Emil Jimenez in the second game of their three-game series against the Chicago White Sox at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the eighth inning, with New York leading 10-4.
Jimenez called a strike on a fastball from White Sox reliever Trevor Richards that missed high by 6.07 inches. According to Umpire Auditor, it is the season’s biggest strike-call mistake for a non-position player pitch.
An amused Dominguez called for a challenge, since the home team had both of its challenges remaining, but to his surprise, the request was denied, leaving a wry smile on his face.
Fans were quick to share their reactions to the controversial moment, with many asking for an explanation.
Some other fans backed Jimenez’s call to deny the request, stating that the challenge must be made immediately.
While the game moved on from the missed strike call quickly, the Bronx Bombers went on to win the contest and, with that, the series. However, the White Sox won the series finale on Thursday, thereby avoiding a sweep.
The Yankees Will Continue Their Homestand By Hosting the Reds
The Bombers host the Cincinnati Reds for a three-game series in the Bronx, starting Friday. The Yankees are in red-hot form, sitting atop the AL East with a 45-28 overall record, three games ahead of second-place Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Despite losing their captain Aaron Judge to a stress fracture in his right rib at the start of June, the team has played resiliently. After completing their homestand, the Yankees hit the road to take on the Tigers and the Red Sox.
