Boston Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras finds himself at the center of drama one day after he was ejected for tapping his helmet while heading to the dugout. This time, his frustrations came to the fore when the Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli struck him out.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cavalli’s slider caught Contreras looking for a strikeout. The right-hander reportedly yelled, “Sit down, boy,” toward Willson as he walked away from the plate looking stunned.
Upon hearing those words out of Cavalli’s mouth, Contreras immediately turned back, attempted to charge toward the mound, and threw his helmet before teammates and coaches restrained him. Both the bullpen and the benches emptied to avoid any violent confrontation.
The altercation led to the ejections of Contreras, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy, Red Sox’s Nate Eaton, and Nationals’ Miles Mikolas.
The viral altercation resulted in a flurry of reactions from fans on X:
“Dude needs a week long suspension and therapy. Buddies had his feelings hurt all year,” one fan wrote.
“Willson Contreras is the biggest clown in MLB, grab some pine buddy,” another commented.
“This dude clearly needs some help,” one fan reacted.
“Good lord man does he genuinely do this once a week?” one fan asked.
“It feels like the “Willson Contreras mad about something and wants to charge the mound” thing happens at least once a series,” one fan added.
“I hope Contreras is a Red Sox for life,” one fan remarked.
Willson Contreras’ Controversial Episodes This Week
This was the third incident this week involving Willson Contreras.
Earlier, the Red Sox slugger was involved in a benches-clearing exchange with the New York Yankees after a heated confrontation with pitcher Will Warren. Before Warren pitched near Contreras’ arm on a 3-2 pitch, resulting in a walk, the Red Sox star had hit a home run and an RBI single off Warren earlier in the game. The situation didn’t escalate to ejections, but warnings were issued to both.
“It’s part of the game,” Contreras said. “Nothing happened. It looks worse when everybody comes out.”
Then, on Monday, Contreras was ejected for tapping his helmet to protest a check-swing call. The first-base umpire took the sarcastic taunting as an insult and tossed the Red Sox slugger out. Contreras went back to him and calmly asked why he was just tossed out of the game.
Thus, this week, Contreras was warned once and ejected twice.
