    “Irresponsible”; “Doing Damage Control” – Fans React After Yankees Broadcaster Walks Back Huge Anthony Volpe Claim

    New York Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay on Wednesday walked back his Tuesday comment about Anthony Volpe’s role in the minors with the team. In May, the Yankees optioned Volpe to the minors as the team continued with Jose Caballero at shortstop.

    On Tuesday’s “The Michael Kay Show,” he suggested that Volpe was reportedly not OK with playing second base instead of his natural shortstop position in the minors.

    “So, he has not played great at shortstop, and the one thing that he’s done, and I’m not sure that it’s true, but there have been enough people that have told me that it happened, is that when he was in the minor leagues, someone suggested, ‘Maybe you should play some second base,’ and he allegedly replied, ‘No, I’m the shortstop. I’m a shortstop,” Kay said. “That’s not a good look, if it happened.”

    However, on X on Wednesday, Kay wrote that the rumor was wrong in the first place:

    “I spoke of a rumor yesterday on TMKS that Anthony Volpe would not play 2B in the minors. Sounded unlike him, so I checked further today and there is absolutely no truth to it whatsoever. He never refused to work at second. Will speak more of it today at 1 pm
    @ESPNNewYork.”

    However, it might have been too late, suggested one fan:

    “Should have checked first Michael…cat’s already out of the bag.”

    Yankees’ Anthony Volpe Struggles To Keep Hold of SS Position

    Anthony Volpe has struggled at both sides of the plate this season. The former Gold Glover’s defense has deteriorated over the last two seasons.

    After Volpe missed time earlier this season following shoulder surgery, Caballero took over at shortstop and has done well. Volpe’s time in rehab assignments was even extended because Caballero was performing so well that the club thought it would be better for Volpe to remain there.

    It’s not only about defense, but Caballero has also put the ball in play more often than Volpe, who has managed only one home run this year. Meanwhile, Caballero has hit 10 already.

    After the win against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the shortstop position will be rotated between Caballero and Volpe.

    While Volpe has the support of Boone, he won’t be able to save his spot on the roster if he doesn’t improve on the field soon.
