On Saturday, January 10, the Chicago Cubs made their first big splash of the offseason, signing free agent Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract.
Bregman had an impressive 2025 season for the Boston Red Sox. Batting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, the infielder established himself as a fan favorite at Fenway Park, earning his third All-Star selection.
With Bregman’s services secured, The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans believes the Cubs should strike while the iron is hot and go after his former Houston Astros teammate, Kyle Tucker, another top free agent this winter.
“I don’t know Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker’s relationship, they’ve been former teammates. If you’re the Cubs and you really want to get serious, why not both?” Rosecrans said (Timestamp: 8:48).
“You have the money. If you’re actually like, ‘Hey, we want to win it,’ go sign Kyle Tucker too,” he added.
Tucker is someone who is already loved by the fans at Wrigley Field. Playing for the Cubs in 2025, Tucker enjoyed a strong season, finishing with a .266 batting average, 22 home runs, and 73 RBIs. Just like Bregman, Tucker also earned himself an All-Star honor.
Insider Brings Up One Major Intangible Element That Alex Bregman Brings To The Chicago Cubs
On Sunday’s episode of the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast, sportscaster Matt Spiegel, who works for Chicago-based radio station “670 The Score,” brought up an extremely important intangible factor that Alex Bregman brings to the Cubs – his clubhouse presence.
“They kept Justin Turner on the roster all year because he brought that (clubhouse presence), and they admitted that it was important,” Spiegel said (Timestamp: 20:37).
“This (Bregman) is a better fit than Justin Turner. This is why Schwarber is a legend, because Schwarber has all of that, and produces. If Bregman has all of that and produces, that’s when the value really jumps up,” he added.
For a team that has as many impressive young players as the Chicago Cubs, signing a player like Alex Bregman could be the addition the roster needs to go that extra step and realize their sky-high potential.
Bregman is set to make his first appearance in a Chicago Cubs uniform once spring training begins in February.
