The drama between Philadelphia Phillies President Dave Dombrowski and Phillies star Bryce Harper has made the headlines in the world of baseball. Harper, 33, who has been with the Phillies since 2019, was subject to some extremely critical comments from President Dombrowski last October.

During a media interaction at the time, President Dombrowski mentioned that Harper did not have an “elite season.” While Bryce Harper didn’t respond to Dombrowski’s comments immediately, he expressed his unhappiness over Dombrowski’s comments when he arrived for spring training this year.

Bryce Harper mentioned he does not get motivated by such comments, and said the whole situation was ‘wild.’ Since Harper made these comments, several people have commented about this situation involving the player and the President. One such notable individual who commented on the issue is ex-Phillies GM Ruben Amaro.

Defending President Dombrowski, Amaro said on 94 WIP Sportsradio:

I think [Dombrowski] was just being honest. I don’t think there was any purpose behind it. I think maybe it was something they had talked about internally, or something like that… One, I don’t think he thought that they would be blown out of proportion, like it has been at times. I think he was just sort of being honest that Bryce would be back being Bryce.”

Dave Dombrowski’s comments on Bryce Harper come after the Philadelphia Phillies star recorded 501 at-bats with an average of .261. Further, he scored 72 runs, hit 27 home runs, and had 75 RBIs.

Ruben Amaro reveals whether Dave Dombrowski’s comments on Bryce Harper are wrong or not

After Ruben Amaro defended Dave Dombrowski by mentioning the latter had no clue his comments would be taken out of context, Amaro was asked whether what Dombrowski said about Harper to the media was wrong. While Amaro didn’t label Dombrowski’s statements wrong, he did mention that he was surprised.

In the same interaction as above, Amaro said:

“I was just a little surprised that he said it, but, because you know, typically you don’t say that sort of stuff. But, I don’t think he said anything wrong, necessarily. I just, I think he was just being truthful and just being honest, and it was taken a little differently from Bryce.”

Furthermore, Ruben Amaro was also asked if Dave Dombrowski’s comments had anything to do with the possibility that Bryce Harper is ‘impossible’ behind closed doors because of the star he is. Amaro answered by saying that Harper has a ton of pride and is a player who wants to be great all the time. He concluded by saying Harper’s reaction was normal and explained that no one would like to be questioned in the manner Harper was.
