Brian Cashman Fires Back At “Same Roster” Allegations Amid Comparisons To $2.15B AL Rival

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has recently fired back against those downgrading the roster, which hasn’t changed a lot. This offseason, the Yankees failed to make any noteworthy additions apart from re-signing Cody Bellinger.

In the meantime, the Yankees’ AL East rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays, who are worth $2.15 billion (via Forbes), have made several notable additions, such as adding Dylan Cease. The Blue Jays defeated the Yankees in the 2025 ALDS and went to the World Series.

On Wednesday, Cashman shared why he believes the 2026 roster is not the same as the 2025 roster, citing the returning players from the injured list, including former Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole.

“It’s not the same roster, I would differ there,” Cashman said. “We have some players returning from the IL who are important players, Garrett Cole being obviously one of them. But we’ve also had some additions from the second half who got their feet wet with the Yankees, some with success, some with failure.”

Cashman also talked about the Blue Jays, who were the ultimate winners out of the AL East.

“We just didn’t get the job done in that timeframe against the Toronto Blue Jays, the defending American League champs, who’ve earned everybody’s respect in the industry,” Cashman added. “We’re all gunning for them first and foremost in the division, as well as the league. And ultimately, the big prize is what the Dodgers possess — the World Championship trophy.”

Brian Cashman’s Yankees Hoping to End World Series Drought In 2026

The Yankees won their last World Series in 2009. Since then, they haven’t managed to collect a single piece of hardware until 2024, when they became American League champions. But even that year, the Dodgers defeated them in five games in the World Series as their drought continued.

The Yankees have kept much of their core intact heading into 2026, including re-signing Cody Bellinger on a major multi-year deal. They also acquired Angel Chivilli to aid the bullpen and promoted Mario Garza to Director of International Scouting.

According to early 2026 futures odds, the Yankees are considered one of the contenders but not the favorites. New York was listed with around +700 odds to win the World Series.
