Thousands of Scottish football fans, known as the Tartan Army, completely took over Fenway Park on Sunday. They transformed the Boston Red Sox vs. the Texas Rangers matchup into an unforgettable experience for baseball fans and players.
Just one day prior, Scotland secured a gritty 1-0 win over Haiti in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage match at the nearby Boston Stadium in Foxborough. The victory was their first World Cup win in 36 years. Scotland’s last FIFA World Cup appearance came in 1998.
The Red Sox strategically planned the series finale against the Rangers as a promotional heritage night. They gave out special Tartan Red Sox jerseys to Scottish fans, and they filled the bleachers in a literal sea of blue.
Baseball fans on social media were in awe of the incredible atmosphere at Fenway Park.
“Not to be dramatic but I think Scotland being put in this group completely randomly is the best thing to happen to the Red Sox,” a fan noted.
“The basketball team may be the Celtics but the baseball team is now the Scots,” a fan wrote.
“This is awesome but probably so confusing for almost everyone else in the stadium,” a fan chimed in. “It’s usually dead quiet.”
“Don’t know if it was intentional, Boston was the perfect city for the Scots,” a fan noted.
Between 5000 to 10,000 kilted fans marched half-mile from Evans Way Park to the stadium. They received police escort throughout the march.
Scotland currently leads Group C with three points. Brazil and Morocco are right behind with a point each after they played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
Tartan Army’s Support Didn’t Help Red Sox Against Rangers in Game 3
The Boston Red Sox suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Texas Rangers on Sunday. The energetic support from the Tartan Army wasn’t enough for Boston to secure a series sweep at home. Red Sox had won the first two games, 10-1 and 6-3, on Friday and Saturday.
Rangers slugger Wyatt Lanford drew first blood with a homer off the first pitch. Catcher Kyle Higashioka extended the lead with a three-run homer in the second inning. William Contreras powered the Red Sox offense, smashing two solo home runs. However, they couldn’t mount a comeback.
Former Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi earned the victory. He pitched seven innings, striking out six, while giving up three runs, three hits and a walk. Meanwhile Jacob Latz secured his 11th save of the season, handling the final four outs of the game.
Up next for the Red Sox is a series opener against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park on Tuesday. The Rangers’ next game is a home series opener against the Minnesota Twins on Monday.
