The Oakland Athletics are scheduled to play a few select games at the Las Vegas Ballpark this season to generate buzz among fans on the Vegas Strip ahead of their new stadium’s inauguration in 2028. From 2025 to 2027, their temporary home will be Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.
The decision to play some games in Vegas at the home of their Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas Aviators, aims to boost local interest ahead of their permanent relocation to Nevada. As part of their six-game homestand at the LV ballpark, the A’s hosted the Rockies for a three-game series over the weekend, but the series finale on Sunday didn’t go as planned.
The Colorado offense was on song after a provisional loss in the series on Sunday afternoon. The Rockies piled on a record-breaking 23 runs in the game as hitters found the sweet spot on their bats and took advantage of the ballpark’s smaller dimensions, ultimately winning 23-9 and avoiding a series sweep.
Fans shared their bemused reactions to the Rockies piling on a record-breaking score against the A’s while criticizing the ballpark’s design for the shocking scoreline.
“This stadium needs to be burned to the ground Or just have Tball played there,” one fan commented.
“Best thing about this record is it wasn’t in Coors. It was in an even bigger joke of a park. John Fisher, way to ruin baseball,” another fan commented.
Some other fans questioned hosting major-league games at the ballpark, with one suggesting that any offensive stat could be broken in this stadium.
“All kinds of offensive stat records will be broken in that little league park and every single one of them will have an asterisk beside it,” one fan commented.
“Put the World Series here and it will be absolute CINEMA,” another fan commented.
“That stadium needs to be off limits. If the Rockies can get in there and do that, who knows what a good team could do. 30 runs? The Rockies can’t even score all that well in their own home park,” yet another fan commented.
Athletics Manager Was Optimistic About Hosting the Six-Game Homestand in Las Vegas
The Athletics won four of the six games at the Las Vegas ballpark, claiming back-to-back series wins against the Brewers and the Rockies. Before the homestand began on June 8, manager Mark Kotsay was asked to reflect on the management’s decision to play a few trial games at the ballpark in Vegas.
“It’s good to be here in Vegas to play a regular-season series in front of a community that we’re going to be a big part of. When we come here in Spring Training, there’s a fun environment and a casualness to a series that, in Spring Training, makes no difference as to the result,” Kotsay said.
“Coming here in a regular-season series that counts, obviously, there’s a different mindset, different attitude, and different approach to our days than there would be for spring training,” he added.
The A’s also lost their series opener against the Brewers in a high-scoring game, 15-14, then won four straight matches only to lose again by a staggering scoreline of 23-9 on Sunday, capping off the homestand in Vegas. Oakland will now head back to Raley Field in West Sacramento to begin a seven-game homestand against the Pirates and the Angels.
