Deion Sanders has picked Ryan Staub to be his new starting quarterback, demoting Week 1 starter Kaidon Salter to a backup role as we go into Week 3 of college football. Salter was benched during the first half of Colorado’s Week 2 31-7 victory over Delaware, with Staub being the top passer for the team, taking over in the second quarter.
Now, some in the world of football seem to think it’s game over for Kaidon Salter, and maybe also for Julian Lewis, and that they should go on the transfer portal and find a new school to play for. Not necessarily, says sports pundit RJ Young.
Speaking on Tuesday, on “Adapt & Respond,” RJ Young said:
“I know there are those that are already going to say that Julian Lewis should jump into the portal, that Kaidon Salter should also, if he’s got a red shirt left – I don’t think he does – he should sit down somewhere and find somewhere else to play because that’s the nature of the sport. And I would tell anybody, listen: Coach Prime has known Kaidon Salter for a very long time. Coached against him in high school.” (3:30)
“You want to keep Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis engaged for as long as you possibly can,” he added.
It’s true that if Ryan Staub gets a hold of the starting quarterback position at Colorado, this will almost certainly be the end of Kaidon Salter’s college career. However, Lewis’ case is completely different. The former five-star recruit is currently in his true freshman year at Colorado, and he could easily wait and develop his game over the next two years and see what happens with Staub’s career at Colorado.
More importantly, RJ Young points out that Staub is far from an established starter. He looked better than both Salter and Lewis in their victory over Delaware. However, that’s hardly a true thermometer of the opposition still ahead for Colorado. Week 3’s game against Houston Cougars will be a better test of his abilities.

Does Deion Sanders Know How To Deal With Colorado’s Quarterback Situation?
Even shortly after the Colorado win on Saturday, it seemed pretty clear that the Colorado Buffaloes were going to have a quarterback room issue moving forward this year. Deion Sanders was asked about this directly by the press after the end of the game, and according to him, he already had a plan in mind:
“I know exactly how I’m going to handle the quarterback situation,” Sanders said after Saturday’s win, via On3. “I’m not going to say it, but yeah. I’m not lost for direction. [Staub] has just been waiting for his opportunity. Never jumped in the portal, he had every right to think that way. … All he needed was the opportunity, and I thought it was time.”
Staub is a former three-star recruit from the class of 2023, who has only played in eight games and started in one over the last two years. He’ll now get his second career start against the Houston Cougars on Friday.
