Kamorea Arnold: A Key Factor in UConn’s Bid for 12th Title

Arnold had a good night for UConn women’s basketball. The sophomore Wisconsin native had nine points and three assists in 20 minutes off the bench as the Huskies advanced to the national championship game with a dominating 85-51 victory over the UCLA Bruins. But you won’t find Kamorea in the box score.

That’s because she goes by KK.

After making 33 starts and averaging 8.9 points, 3.2 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.3 steals as a freshman, the 5’9″ Arnold has transitioned into a super sub role, averaging 5.3 points and 2.8 rebounds while playing more than 21 minutes a game for the 36-3 Huskies.

This is new ground for KK, a three-time Wisconsin State Player of the Year at Germantown High School, where she scored 2,458 career points and led her team to the 2021 Division I state title. Twice Arnold was named the Wisconsin Girls Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year.

The Top 10 Class of 2023 guard chose UConn over schools like South Carolina, her opponent on Sunday, as well as Baylor and Louisville. Which made sense, considering she had been a fan of the program since grade school, as she relayed in a July 2022 article in The Athletic.

“When I was younger, that was like one of my top schools,” Arnold said of UConn. “The playing style I’m in right now in AAU and my coach, he’s kind of similar to Geno (Auriemma), so just that and then just wanting to be coached by Geno.

“And then be(ing) around great players like Paige (Bueckers), Azzi (Fudd) and all those great players that are there right now.”

Arnold grew up dreaming of playing for Auriemma and UConn. On Sunday, KK and her Huskies teammates will look to defeat South Carolina for the second time this season and cut down the nets as national champions for the first time since 2016.
