Texas Longhorns head women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer has officially secured a contract extension. With that, a pay raise ensured his leadership of the program for the foreseeable future.
Known for his ability to build championship-caliber teams, Schaefer has transformed Texas into a national powerhouse. With his continued tenure, the Longhorns remain strong contenders for conference and national titles.

Vic Schaefer’s Salary & Contract in 2025
As per contract details scheduled for approval by the UT System Board of Regents in its February 19-20 meeting. Schaefer has agreed to a three-year contract extension along with a 4.3% salary increase. This will take effect starting in the 2027–28 season.
Under the terms of his current contract, Schaefer will continue earning an annual salary of $2.3 million through 2026-27. Following that period, his salary will increase by $100,000 each year, reaching a maximum of $2.6 million by 2030.
Before joining the Texas Longhorns, Schaefer played a pivotal role in turning Mississippi State’s women’s basketball program into a national contender. When he arrived, the team was struggling to gain relevance in the conference.
However, during his tenure, he turned the program into an SEC powerhouse. Under Schaefer’s leadership, Mississippi State achieved:
- Four consecutive Sweet 16 appearances
- Three straight Elite Eight berths
- Back-to-back national championship game appearances
Schaefer finished his time at Mississippi State with a 221-62 overall record and led his team to three 30-win seasons. His success was recognized at the national level, earning him the title of National Coach of the Year twice.
Vic Schaefer’s Net Worth
Performance-based incentives remain unchanged, with financial rewards in place for significant team achievements. These include:
- A $250,000 bonus if Texas wins the national championship.
- A $50,000 bonus for securing either the conference regular-season title or the conference tournament title.
- A $50,000 bonus if he is recognized as National Coach of the Year.
Additionally, Schaefer received a special payment of $261,259 in 2022 as part of his compensation package.
One of his most remarkable accomplishments at Mississippi State was transforming Humphrey Coliseum from an underwhelming basketball venue into one of the most intimidating arenas in the country.
What once had a sparse attendance of 100 spectators per game turned into a packed arena of 10,000 fans, making it a difficult place for opponents to play.
Now leading the Texas Longhorns, Schaefer has continued his trend of success. In his five seasons as head coach, he has built an impressive 135-34 record, guiding Texas to three Elite Eight appearances.
His leadership led Texas to a 33-win season in 2023. The program’s highest single-season win total since Jody Conradt’s undefeated national championship team in 1985-86.
Texas Longhorns’ 2024 Season and Future Outlook
Currently, Texas is one of the strongest teams in the country, with a 26-2 overall record and a 12-1 record in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Their 65-58 victory over No. 7 LSU recently boosted them from No. 3 to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 rankings.
