What Geno Auriemma Said About Paige Bueckers Ahead of National Championship

Auriemma has spent time reflecting on Paige’s journey with the team.

“Paige has invested as much – if not more – of her personal self into our program and into her game and into the community than anyone that we’ve had. So, she deserves something like this,” Auriemma said.

Auriemma’s comment highlights Bueckers’ importance to the team and how well she has poured herself into the program. Thus, as UConn prepares to face South Carolina in the 2025 NCAA Championship Game, it will be a bittersweet experience, as this would be her last game for UConn.

One thing that has set Bueckers’ career apart is her commitment to UConn and the game. She arrived at UConn in 2020 as a top recruit in women’s college basketball history. She immediately hit the ground running by leading the team to the Final Four in her first year. Unsurprisingly, she won the Naismith Player of the Year Award.

While injuries and tough losses for the team have prevented the team from winning the championship, Bueckers has always given her all when fit. With her on the team, fans are more confident that UConn will win their matches. She has become a leader in the team.

As the last game approaches, there is a heavy weight on Bueckers’ shoulders. With such an impressive career, she is yet to win the championship. Thus, as this final match approaches, her coach and fans hope she does not become the greatest UConn player to graduate without winning the championship.

Despite not winning the championship, she has contributed to beating No. 1 seed teams five times—an impressive stat no other player has posted in the 21st century in the men’s and women’s NCAA tournament. Hence, no matter how this game ends, Bueckers remains a star and an icon.

Auriemma is proud to be her coach, and we are all happy to have seen her play her heart out for her college.
