Kiyomi McMiller Attracts Major Attention in Transfer Portal

Kiyomi McMiller’s departure from Rutgers had shifted the approach of several teams who could use her skills next season.

Sources told On3 Sports she’s in talks with West Virginia, Florida State, and Louisville. Other programs like USF and St. John’s are also in the mix. Her decision could shake up the college basketball scene for next season.

McMiller’s transfer news broke just hours before Rutgers topped Charleston in the WNIT Super 16. The timing raised some eyebrows. Yet, Scarlet Knights coach Coquese Washington stayed calm. She addressed the situation after the game.

“First, the most important thing for me today was this team and this game,” Washington said. “We do a good job of blocking out anything that could be a distraction, but that wasn’t a distraction for me.” She revealed a recent meeting with McMiller made the move clear. Both agreed that a change was best.

Kiyomi McMiller had a rollercoaster season at Rutgers. She averaged 18.7 points across 21 games. Her career-high 33 points came against Nebraska on Jan. 12. She also notched 30-plus points in two other games. The Jordan Brand athlete earned Big Ten Honorable Mention from the media.

But her time at Rutgers wasn’t without hiccups. McMiller missed games after a suspension for the Jan. 5 USC matchup. She last played for the Scarlet Knights on Feb. 6 against Indiana. Despite practicing and traveling, she sat out the next game at Minnesota. After returning briefly, she missed the season’s final stretch.

    Washington praised her talent regardless.

“Listen, Kiyomi is a fantastic player and she has got an incredibly bright basketball future ahead of her,” the coach said. She wished McMiller and her family well. Meanwhile, Rutgers shifts focus to Sunday’s WNIT Great 8 clash with Buffalo.
