It’s no secret head coach Geno Auriemma has built a monster of a program over in Storrs, Connecticut, winning 12 titles since taking over for the Huskies in 1985.
Now, coming off a 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball title, led by superstar Paige Bueckers, they add a sixth No. 1 overall pick to their collection, more than any school ever.

Paige Bueckers Tells Good Morning America Why UConn Produces So Many First-Overall WNBA Draft Picks
After being picked No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings in Monday’s 2025 WNBA Draft, Bueckers sat down with “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts Wednesday. She praised the Huskies’ coaching staff, lauding them for their ability to produce professionals and winners.
“Yeah, I mean, obviously the coaching staff and what they’ve built there, they produce professionals at all levels and winners,” Bueckers said. “So they’ve definitely got something going on there for sure.”
Bueckers follows the legacies of all-time Husky greats Sue Bird (2002, Seattle Storm), Diana Taurasi (2004, Phoenix Mercury), Tina Charles (2010, Connecticut Sun), Maya Moore (2011, Minnesota Lynx) and Breanna Steward (2016, Storm) being picked No. 1 overall. Those are big shoes to fill with each of the five before her reaching incredible heights in the WNBA.
Bird, a four-time WNBA champion, is a 13-time all-star and was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer earlier this month. Taurasi, a three-time champion, 11-time all-star and 2009 WNBA MVP. Charles, an eight-time all-star, earned the MVP award in 2012. Moore, a four-time champion, is a six-time all-star and 2014 MVP.
