“He Became My Grandpa, Tough Loving Grandpa”: Paige Bueckers Turns Emotional Geno Auriemma Moment into Hilarious Banter

Former UConn Huskies star and current Dallas Wings player Paige Bueckers jokingly poked fun at her former coach, Geno Auriemma, right after they shared an emotional moment. On Tuesday, Oct. 28, @justwomenssports on Instagram posted a video of an interview, featuring Bueckers and Huskies head coach Auriemma.

In the clip, Auriemma can be heard praising Bueckers for her five-year stint with the Huskies, given that she became an inspiration for many aspirants who followed her. Bueckers acknowledged Auriemma’s words, but at the same time, jokingly wished she had waited for the 71-year-old to text her first.

“ I think I messed up. I texted him, I missed him way too early, and I should have waited longer just for him to text me. He missed me first. But I just, to be so accustomed to something for five years and really just growing that relationship, you just become super used to it. Like he became my grandpa, tough loving grandpa. You miss it every single day. So, all that to say is there’s a phrase of, ‘You don’t know what you got until it’s gone,'” Bueckers said (0:14).

“So coach, how much did you actually miss me?” she concluded.

In the 2024-25 college basketball season, which was Bueckers’ final campaign under the tutelage of coach Auriemma, the Huskies won the 2025 national championship after beating the 2024 national champions, the South Carolina Gamecocks, by 23 points, 82-59, in this year’s NCAA title game. It was Bueckers’ first national title and Auriemma and the Huskies’ 12th.
