Ex-South Carolina Star MiLaysia Fulwiley Gets Playful Reply From Kim Mulkey’s Assistant Coach Over New Training Clip

Former South Carolina star MiLaysia Fulwiley, who transferred to LSU in the offseason, has begun preparing for the upcoming season of the Unrivaled Basketball 3v3 League. Her latest training footage has captured the attention of LSU coach Kim Mulkey’s assistant, Gary Redus.

Redus reposted a story from the official Instagram account of Unrivaled Basketball, where Fulwiley can be seen making layups through contact and also sweating while defending the guards. Redus playfully replied to Fulwiley’s stance, saying:

“Is that a stance I see?”

Fulwiley seems to have acknowledged the message of the assistant coach, as she reposted his reaction on her Instagram account while adding her own smiling emojis.

At South Carolina, Fulwiley was a top scoring option off the bench for Dawn Staley as she averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists last season. However, with no potential starting role in sight, she decided on a change in scenery.

Seeing she is available for the taking, Kim Mulkey wasted no time in bringing her onboard with the Tigers. After a single convincing conversation with Fulwiley and her mother, the transfer was sealed. In her official statement, Mulkey said:

“I’m excited to welcome MiLaysia as the newest member of our LSU Tiger family! She’s bringing her incredible playmaking ability to Baton Rouge, standing out as one of the most electrifying talents in college basketball. Her ability to impact winning has been clear throughout her career, and we can’t wait to see her shine in purple and gold at the PMAC soon.”

Factors That Could Have Played A Part in MiLaysia Fulwiley’s Departure From South Carolina

Despite scoring consistently, a starting role rarely came by for MiLaysia Fulwiley, as she started in three of 77 games. Moreover, during her sophomore season, her minutes only ticked up slightly to around 18.9 per game, despite averaging 11.7 points and earning the SEC Sixth Player of the Year award.

At the same time, the competition was only getting intense at South Carolina with incoming transfer Ta’Niya Latson from Florida State, who averaged over 20 ppg last season, fueling fears of a further reduced role for Fulwiley with South Carolina.

Staley revealed on The Breakfast Club that she indeed met the basketball star and her mother before Fulwiley entered the transfer portal. Staley said:

“I thought MiLaysia was getting better… LSU is going to get the best of her now. We went through the hard part of smoothing some rough edges and getting her to create good habits. The playing time, the whatever – we were maybe taking her out of the game when she felt like she wanted to keep playing through things – now, she probably questions that part of it, and I’m OK with that. A lot of players leave because of playing time. It’s not for all the other stuff – we treat them like royalty.”

Fulwiley will now hope to get a starting position with LSU.
