“He’s a Perfectionist”: KK Arnold Shares How Geno Auriemma Turns Simple Drills Into Grueling Tests at UConn

KK Arnold has been a member of the UConn Huskies for the past two seasons. In that time, she has had the opportunity to learn under one of the greatest head coaches in the history of women’s college basketball, Geno Auriemma. Auriemma has been the coach of the Huskies since 1985, leading the team to 12 national championships, including one last season.

On Monday, Arnold appeared on ‘The Dinner Table’ podcast. On the show, she was asked about the hardest drill she has ever done. Arnold thought about it for a minute before admitting that it could be any drill. She pointed to Auriemma being a perfectionist as a reason that any drill could be difficult.

“See, I’ll say with us and him, especially with him (Geno Auriemma), he’s a perfectionist,” KK Arnold said (Timestamp 28:05). “If it doesn’t look right to him, we’re redoing it. So, every drill, honestly, could be the hardest drill. You may never know. If we miss a shot or whatever, we restart. That continues to lead on for the rest of the practice. It never changes. I feel like each and every drill is a challenge.

When it’s two-line layups or anything that we do, like our Candace drill, layup, three, whatever it is, it always has a challenge to it. We always accept the challenge, but when it gets hard, we’re like, ‘All right, let’s push through. Let’s get it going.'”

KK Arnold Opens Up About Learning From Paige Bueckers

As a member of the UConn Huskies for the past two seasons, KK Arnold had the opportunity to watch one of the best players in the sport closely, Paige Bueckers. Earlier on ‘The Dinner Table’ podcast, Arnold opened up about how beneficial it was to learn from Bueckers. She spoke about how she took her under her wing and helped her with anything she needed.

In particular, she found watching Bueckers prepare and how she took care of her body was beneficial to Arnold becoming a more well-rounded player. Arnold has had a limited role on the Huskies the past two seasons, only playing a supportive role on the team. However, heading into her junior year, she is expected to be relied on more by head coach Geno Auriemma. She is looking forward to this opportunity.
