Former Iowa Hawkeyes star and now Golden State Valkyries guard Kate Martin recently showed love to a member of her alma mater. On Thursday, July 3, Martin reposted Tanner Henningsen’s, who is a member of the Hawkeyes coaching staff, recent Instagram post on her own Instagram story with a supportive four-word comment as Henningsen and his partner, Annie Galvin, went on a trip around San Francisco, California.
Martin was drafted into the WNBA in 2024 with the 18th overall pick in the second round. Before this, she spent all five of her college basketball years of eligibility with then-coach Lisa Bluder’s Hawkeyes. As she spent a hefty amount of time with the program, it seems as though Martin has consistently kept the connections and relationships she has made in Iowa.
“Miss You guys already,” Martin wrote.

In her five years of collegiate hoops with the Hawkeyes, Martin averaged 8.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per contest, and then she posted career-best averages in her final campaign in the 2023-24 season with 13.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists a game.
Kate Martin Spoke Highly About Her Former Iowa Hawkeyes Star Teammate Caitlin Clark
Back on June 10 of this year, Kate Martin was guested on WNBA legend Sue Bird’s podcast on Youtube entitled, “Bird’s Eye View”. In one instance, Bird asked Martin to reminisce on what it was like to play alongside former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar and now Indiana Fever sophomore Caitlin Clark during her time in college basketball. For Martin, she knew early on that Clark was going to be special.
“So, I had heard about this Caitlin Clark and I was like watching videos of her just, like, having like 40 points, like averaging a million in high school. And I was like, ‘Oh, this girl thinks she’s going to come here and rule the world,’ you know, like, whatever. And there she did, came in right away and ruled the world, and I was like, ‘Alright, here we go.’ I just remember that summer before and she was doing things that I had never seen anybody do before,” Martin reminisced. “And as a freshman to come in and have that kind of confidence, not everybody has that. We knew she was going to be outstanding,” she asserted.
Both Martin and Clark are now carving out their own professional careers in the WNBA, as Martin and coach Natalie Nakase’s Golden State Valkyries currently have a 9-7 record in the season far while Clark and coach Stephanie White’s Fever have uncorked a 9-8 early thus far.
