One Seeds USC, Texas Prepare for Respective Elite Eight Showdowns

The No. 1 seed USC Trojans face a major challenge in the Elite Eight without star Juju Watkins, who was sidelined for the season last week after an ACL injury.

In her absence, freshmen Kennedy Smith and Avery Howell delivered against No. 5 seed Kansas State, securing USC’s spot in the regional final. Smith led with 19 points on 50% shooting, while Howell contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, hitting four three-pointers.

Their next test comes against UConn, the sport’s most decorated program. Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb praised her young players after Saturday’s win.

“They’re winners above everything else,” she said. “We’ve been stepping up all season in different ways, so I think we were really ready for the moment today.”

Meanwhile, Texas and TCU will clash in Birmingham with a Final Four berth on the line. Graduate guard Hailey Van Lith, who dropped 26 points in TCU’s win over No. 3 seed Notre Dame, leads the Horned Frogs.

Van Lith previously eliminated Texas in 2023 while at Louisville, marking the only time under head coach Vic Schaefer that Texas failed to reach the Elite Eight.

Schaefer acknowledges the challenge but urges his team to stay composed.

“There’s so much on the line, but you’ve got to just go play,” he said. “You’ve got to relax. You’ve got to go play. It’s another game.”

Texas will rely on senior guard Rori Harmon and sophomore forward Madison Booker to counter TCU’s trio of Van Lith, Sedona Prince, and Madison Conner.

“I’m just ready to play. I’m ready to win,” Booker said.
