Hughey’s coaching career spans over two decades, beginning as an assistant at South Carolina State University (2004-07). He later worked at the University of South Carolina, the University of Central Florida, Rutgers University, Texas, and Florida State University, guiding each team to qualify for the NCAA tournament.
In 2014, he took over as head coach at Houston, leading the Cougars to three WNIT berths and earning his 100th career win in February. His leadership and experience will assist the Cavaliers as they strive to enhance their performance in the ACC.
“I am extremely grateful and excited that Amaka has blessed me with such a fabulous opportunity to be a part of her outstanding staff at the prestigious University of Virginia,” said Hughey. “It’s time to get to work!”
Hughey’s arrival comes at an exciting time for Virginia Women’s Basketball. In December 2024, UVA alumnus Alexis Ohanian made a record-breaking multi-year commitment to the program to strengthen recruitment efforts and retain outstanding personnel. Furthermore, the roster has made substantial strides under the new coach, giving reason to be confident about future seasons.
