LSU Tigers guard Flau’jae Johnson recently got candid about the 2024 SEC Championship game, after which she apologized to South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley. The Gamecocks won the final 79-72.
On Wednesday, July 16, Johnson appeared on NFL legend Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast. The former player asked her about the aforementioned game in which her brother, Trayron Milton, jumped over the stands and onto the court.
This happened because at the 2:08 mark of the fourth quarter, a scuffle was ignited on the court, as Johnson and Gamecocks standout MiLaysia Fulwiley exchanged words and shoves, with Ashlyn Watkins joining in. Johnson pushed Watkins, with now-Chicago Sky center Kamilla Cardoso storming in to drop Johnson to the floor, prompting Milton to try and protect his sister.
“That was a crazy moment, but that’s my dog. But, that’s how my mama raised us, not to do that in that type of situation, but like we all each other’s protector. He’s my protector. I never had a dad, so he like my protector. So, that’s my dog,” Johnson said (1:03:54).
Sharpe then brought up the fact that Johnson apologized to Dawn Staley for her brother’s actions. The incoming LSU senior shared her reasons, saying (1:04:07):
“That’s not what I’m about and that’s not what he’s about. He ain’t that type of person. I knew he wasn’t trying to harm nobody but he wanted to make sure ain’t nobody harm my sister. So, that’s just me being like, ‘I apologize for this and that.’ But yeah, that was pretty much it.”
Johnson is coming off her junior stint of collegiate basketball in the 2024-25 season, where she averaged 18.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals per contest to lead the Tigers to a 31-6 overall record (12-4, SEC).
Flau’jae Johnson Clears the Air on What Her Brother’s Intentions Were in The 2024 SEC Championship Game
On the same podcast, Flau’jae Johnson defended her brother, Trayron Milton, for going over the scorer’s table and onto the court.
Johnson told Sharpe that he was just trying to protect her, and it was a decision he made in real time.
“Oh my God, shout out to my boy. I have to say it was a little split second like. The problem was, he wasn’t supposed to be on the rail. If you look, he was right on the rail when it happened, and I think he just saw me get pushed. But, he wasn’t going over there to square up with nobody. I’m like, ‘Bro, he’s 6’7 like,’ it’s going to take three of us.’ But, he was just making sure I look good ’cause my brother, he like my security,'” Johnson said (1:02:58).
Flau’jae Johnson now heads into her fourth season of collegiate hoops in the 2025-26 season with coach Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers. They will look to win their second national title in four years after being bounced out of the 2025 NCAA tournament in the Elite Eight by the UCLA Bruins with a seven-point loss, 72-65.
