South Carolina Gamecocks guard Maddy McDaniel returned after serving a three-day suspension, and her coach had something to say to her. On Sunday, Nov. 23, the Gamecocks defeated coach Jen Brown’s Queens University of Charlotte Royals 121-49 in their home arena, the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina. McDaniel played her first game after missing the last three with a sudden, undisclosed suspension.
During the post-game press conference, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley was asked about what happened and how McDaniel was able to return quickly after what was presumed to be a lengthy time off. Staley credited the rest of her players for helping their teammate return as soon as she could, given that the sophomore may have already faced the consequences of her actions.
“I mean here’s the thing, Maddy’s a great young lady. That’s one like, you know, she is of great character. But, you know, some of the choices that you make have consequences. It was more on Maddie and how she’s communicating with me and our staff, and communicating with her teammates. Her teammates are the people that are the ones that was her voice, and they had a more powerful voice when it comes to that,” Staley said. (5:23)
“Obviously, they like Maddy. They like all of their teammates, they want our entire team together, and they voiced that,” she concluded.
As previously mentioned, no reason was disclosed to the public regarding McDaniel’s suspension. Nevertheless, she is looking to get back into the mix and help her team in their pursuit of the program’s fourth national title in the 2025-26 season, third in the last five years.
