Cavinder Twins’ Miami Endures Close Loss to Florida State
Miami women’s basketball lost another close game in front of a packed crowd at the Watsco Center on Sunday afternoon. The Canes narrowly lost 83-82 to cross-state rival Florida State, the nation’s highest-scoring women’s basketball team.
Senior guard Haley Cavinder led Miami with 27 points on 10-16 shooting from the field, 4-8 from behind the arc and 3-4 at the free-throw line. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, added a team-high seven assists and recorded one steal and one block.
“Look at her stat line,” Miami head coach Tricia Cullop said of Cavinder. “She had 27 points, was guarded by their best defender all night and had only one turnover. She gives us everything she’s got every second she’s out there. She’s one of the biggest competitors. I don’t know that she always gets the credit she deserves because of our record, but I’d put her up against a lot of the people in the nation.”
“She’s phenomenal, and I have enjoyed coaching her. She wills her team to work harder because of all the effort she puts in,” Cullop added.
Cavinder reached the 2,500-point mark for her career last week, becoming the only active player with 2,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists. Her twin sister, Hanna, had six rebounds and six assists.
Miami put up a strong offensive performance, finishing the contest shooting 53.4 percent from the field, 39.1 percent from behind the arc and 68.8 percent at the free-throw line. The Canes started the game with an early three-point lead from Jasmyn Roberts, but Florida State responded with a three-pointer to tie the contest at three apiece.
From there, Miami continued to trail until they put together a 9-0 run to tie the game at 67-67 in the final quarter. Haley Cavinder’s three-pointer gave the Canes a four-point lead, but Florida State evened the score once again.
A couple of Cavinder’s free throws with nine seconds on the clock gave the Canes an 82-81 lead, but FSU’s Makayla Timpson scored the game-clinching layup. Miami’s loss came on the heels of a two-point road loss at No. 10 N.C. State.

Sunday’s loss was so heartbreaking that Miami players refused to do postgame interviews. The Canes have now dropped to 13-12 overall and 3-11 in the ACC, sitting in 15th place in the conference standings with four games left. They will now focus on their next game against second-ranked Notre Dame on Friday.
