The WNBA has not had a guard win the regular season MVP award in the 2020s decade, sparking a debate among fans. On Sunday, Sept. 21, as the 2025 WNBA playoffs entered the semifinal stage, the league announced Las Vegas Aces stalwart A’ja Wilson as this year’s MVP after she averaged 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game.
With this, the drought for a guard to win the regular-season MVP trophy continues, with former Washington Mystics star Elena Delle Donne being the last guard to take it home in 2019. On Monday, Sept. 22, @overtimewbb on Instagram uploaded a graphic featuring Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark and Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers, prompting the discussion on which guard will win it first.

Fans online flooded the comments section with their takes, circling Bueckers and USC Trojans standout JuJu Watkins, while dismissing Clark in the process.
“Paige or JuJu,” one fan said.
“I’m awaiting on JuJu,” another fan claimed.
“Probably Paige or JuJu when she gets there,” another user shared.
“Paige, I really think she’s the next face of the league,” a fan wrote.
Other users in the comments section named players other than Bueckers or Watkins.
“Well, no hate on A’ja, I love her, she’s amazing! But, Kelsey Mitchell should’ve won this year like for real,” one fan posted.
“It really depends on a team’s scheme. If they don’t run the offense through their point guard, meaning giving them all the opportunities, then the bigs will continue to win,” another fan explained.
“Not gonna lie, as insane as the talent is, I don’t think any guard will get it in the next decade; not with the potential and current 4/5’s,” a fan pointed out.
The 2025 WNBA playoffs continue with Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces taking on the Caitlin Clark-less Indiana Fever, while the Minnesota Lynx face the Phoenix Mercury, both as a best-of-five semifinals series. Bueckers was awarded this year’s Rookie of the Year award, even as the Wings failed to make it into postseason play, while Watkins is currently recovering from the ACL tear she suffered in the 2025 NCAA tournament.

A’ja Wilson Becomes The Only Four-Time WNBA Regular Season MVP
With A’ja Wilson bagging this year’s regular season MVP trophy, this is her record fourth MVP award to her already-stacked career resume.
Wilson surpassed three of the league’s legends, Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson, as they won the MVP trophy three times each. Wilson, who is now in her seventh year in the league, has become one of the faces of the WNBA as a premier center in her generation.
