Sophie Cunningham was traded to the Indiana Fever in the 2025 off-season after she spent six years at Phoenix Mercury. Playing alongside Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, it seemed like Cunningham had fit in well with the Fever squad. As a veteran guard, she added depth to the team’s scoring prowess, nailing triples during crunch moments of the game.
In the game against the Connecticut Sun on Aug. 17, Cunningham suffered from a knee injury. During the second quarter of the game, she crashed into Sun guard Bria Hartley while defending her from scoring. She was seen clutching her knee and falling on the court right after the hit.
Seems like August wasn’t so kind to Cunningham, given it ended in such a tantalizing injury. But that did not make her hesitate to cherish some of her good memories from this month, expressing them with a photo dump on her Instagram page.
Sophie posted glimpses of her moments through August, some of which included clips of her clutch triples for the Indiana Fever. She captioned the post “august,” which shows how she is grateful for every opportunity she had this month.
Cunningham has been a vital part of the Fever’s roster, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.

In this moment, her teammates Aliyah Boston, Sydney Colson, and Lexie Hull gathered in the comments to hype up their fellow teammate.
“👅👅👅,” Hull wrote in the comments.
Aliyah Boston seemed impressed with Cunningham’s finesse in the post and couldn’t resist praising her.
“😍😍😍 slayyy babesss,” Boston commented.
The most hilarious comment was from Sydney Colson. As tantalizing as a knee injury could be, Colson seemed amused by Cunningham adding a picture of her injured self on the court in the final slide.
“Last slide 😂” Colson wrote.
With Sophie Cunningham’s exit following this injury, the Fever might now need to dig deeper into a rotation that already runs thin. The team has confirmed Cunningham will undergo an MRI to assess the severity of the injury. However, no injury timeline is available until the test results come in.
Sophie Cunningham’s sister calls out the WNBA after her sister’s devastating injury
Sophie Cunningham’s sister, Lindsey Cunningham, called out the WNBA for their poor officiating. The officials have come under the microscope quite a lot recently, and Lindsey raised questions about the WNBA taking inadequate measures to protect the players.
Taking up the issue on X, Lindsey Cunningham wrote:
“@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you, @sophaller.”

Sophie Cunningham’s mom, Paula Cunningham, also took up the issue of her daughter’s injury on X. She particularly blamed Bria Hartley for the same, calling out the Sun guard for “having trouble wherever she goes.” Paula also described Hartley as “plain mean and plays out of control” in a now-deleted post.
