Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have constantly been trending all season. Whether it be Caitlin Clark’s performances, rumors of a rift between head coach Stephanie White and Clark, troubles with officiating, or the most recent fiasco with the Phoenix Mercury. Sophie Cunningham recently talked about her former team.
During her podcast episode on 27th June, Cunningham talked about Alyssa Thomas’ altercation with Clark, among other things. She also claimed that she knew some inside scoop about the Mercury.
“Yeah. So fun,” Cunningham answered when asked about playing against the Mercury. “You know what’s funny though? that I know people in their own organization that like nobody likes their team this year. They say that they are like the unfriendliest group. So, we’re not the only ones who feel that way. Internal people feel that way, too,” she claimed (7:54).
Cunningham was unaware of the tweet that the Phoenix Mercury’s official X account had posted. It was seemingly an attack on Caitlin Clark, using wordplay with DeWanna Bonner’s name. The tweet was deleted later on. Cunningham’s co-host and childhood friend, West Wilson, showed the deleted post, which drew her reaction.
Sophie Cunningham slams the WNBA and the referees for the treatment of Caitlin Clark
Cunningham did not hold back when she started talking about the Clarks’ incident with Alyssa Thomas. She claimed that, unfortunately, none of the Fever teammates saw it happen during the game, or else they would’ve had Clark’s back. She also stated that that type of stuff keeps happening with Clark every other game. She was furious with Thomas’ fist on Clark’s neck in the altercation.
“You see the videos of like literally kneeing and cheapshotting C in the throat. If she did that to any of our teammates, we’d be pissed. But they are definitely targeting her [Clark] and the league and the refs do nothing to protect her,” Cunningham made bold claim (2:51).
Sophie Cunningham then showed her humility as she wondered why she was on WNBA’s 30-year celebratory poster instead of Caitlin Clark to represent the Indiana Fever.
