Dallas Morning News reporter Kevin Sherrington was tossed into the limelight on Thursday when he asked Dallas Wings rookie Azzi Fudd about her relationship with teammate Paige Bueckers. Sherrington wanted to know if Fudd and Bueckers were still a couple before the Wings’ PR prevented the No. 1 pick of the 2026 draft from responding.
Sherrington published a story to share his side of the incident that quickly went viral. He wrote (via Yahoo Sports):
“If anyone’s at fault here, it’s the Wings, who … acted as if they were covering for something that didn’t need hiding.”
After months of speculation, Bueckers and Fudd confirmed their relationship last year. In June 2025, Fudd shared a story on Instagram showing her holding a phone case that read “Paige Bueckers’ girlfriend.” A month later, Bueckers, via a “WAG Talk” interview, responded that it was Fudd she was dating when asked to reveal the name of her “D1 girlfriend.”
Kevin Sherrington joined the chorus of confusion from other reporters who were baffled by the Wings’ decision to prevent Fudd from answering the question. Fudd could refuse to respond, which is her right to do, and people would likely respect her desire to keep her off-court life out.
But by not allowing Fudd to answer, Sherrington is saying that the story has already become bigger than it should have been. Fans are assuming that if the Fudd-Bueckers relationship is ongoing, the Wings are in an excellent spot. If they’re no longer together, there could be a concern about how that changes their dynamics on the floor.
Azzi Fudd Expressed Excitement To Reunite With Paige Bueckers
In the postdraft conference on Monday, Azzi Fudd replied when asked about reuniting with Paige Bueckers in Dallas:
“Paige is an incredible player. … She is someone who makes playing basketball look easy. Just the prior experience, knowing how to play with her, off of her, will only help going into this. … I can’t wait, obviously, to play with her again, but to play with every single one of them.”
While there were rumors that the Wings could draft a frontcourt player, the team’s offseason moves hinted at what GM Curt Miller would do. By signing Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard in free agency, Fudd became the logical choice.
The Wings ranked 12th in 3-point shooting last season, making Azzi Fudd’s addition a no-brainer. Fudd averaged 43.6% from deep when she and Paige Bueckers won the 2025 NCAA championship. This season, she posted 44.7% from 3-point distance, underlining her accuracy from long range.
Fudd can’t wait to share the floor again with Bueckers, the reigning Rookie of the Year.
