Las Vegas Aces veteran Chelsea Gray passed Caitlin Clark’s WNBA record for the fourth-highest double-doubles with points and assists on Saturday against the Phoenix Mercury. Gray scored 15 points and dished 11 assists as the Aces routed the Mercury 101-50.
Clark has 21 in 71 appearances in three seasons, while Gray has 22 in 391 games across 12 years. While it’s a great accomplishment on a personal level, the comparison to Clark’s record led to heavy online trolling against Gray.
Most media personalities still think the Aces veteran is a better point guard than Clark, which set the premise for reactions on X after Gray passed the Fever star in double-doubles for points and assists.
One fan mocked the widely used “point-gawd” label for Gray, saying:
“So she’s the ‘point gawd” … 12 year vet but only just passing a PG in their second year?”
Caitlin Clark had tied Chelsea Gray for the same record on Jun. 16
Caitlin Clark got her 21st double-double with points and assists on Jun. 16, tying Chelsea Gray. She recorded 21 points and 14 assists in a 113-91 win for the Indiana Fever against the Toronto Tempo.
Clark has 22 double-doubles overall. She achieved one with points and rebounds on Jun. 19, 2024, with 18 points and 12 rebounds in an 88-81 win. Gray matched Clark’s total double-doubles after Saturday’s performance.
The duo trails Courtney Vandersloot, Alyssa Thomas and Sue Bird for most double-doubles with points and assists. Vandersloot has 62, followed by Thomas at 39 and Bird at 28. It seems Clark might pass everyone by the end of her career.
The other players she trails have each played 350-plus games and haven’t had the same pace as Clark in racking up double-doubles. Interestingly, Clark and Gray can compete for this record against each other on Sunday when the Fever visit Las Vegas. Clark is listed as probable with a back injury, but should likely suit up.
