The Michigan Wolverines may not have to wait long before seeing their highly touted freshman quarterback, Bryce Underwood, take the field. While most first-year signal-callers typically spend their freshman seasons learning from the sidelines, Underwood’s situation might be different.
With Michigan’s quarterback competition wide open, new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey has left the door open for Underwood to compete for playing time right away.

Bryce Underwood Could Play Sooner Than Expected for Michigan
During a media session on Monday, Lindsey discussed Underwood’s potential role and did not rule out the young quarterback’s possible appearance on the field in 2025. While he did not explicitly say Underwood would start, he made it clear that the decision would be based on performance rather than experience.
“If he’s ready to go, he’ll play,” Lindsey said.
“If not, we’ll have somebody else ready to play. But so far, I love his approach. He’s all business, man. He loves football. That’s the most important thing. And he really wants to be the best player he can be. He wants people to push him.”
“One of the things we’ve talked about was, ‘Whatever your dreams are, your aspirations, they’re gonna be mine. My goal is to help you reach those things. Whatever it takes.’ And I think that’s what his attitude is. He’s a team-first guy.”
Lindsey’s words indicated that Michigan’s coaching staff had been impressed with Underwood’s maturity and dedication early in college. Rather than treating him as a developmental player who needs a season on the bench, the Wolverines appear willing to evaluate him as a potential immediate contributor.
Underwood’s Journey to Michigan
Underwood’s path to Michigan was not straightforward. Initially, the five-star quarterback committed to LSU in January 2024, seemingly set on playing in the SEC. However, in a shocking turn of events, he flipped his commitment in November 2024 and chose to stay home, joining Michigan instead.
His decision to switch from the Tigers to the Wolverines was a massive recruiting win for Michigan. As the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class, Underwood’s commitment solidified Michigan’s future at quarterback. The Belleville, Michigan native has been hailed as a generational talent, possessing the size, arm strength, and athleticism that make scouts and coaches rave about his potential.
With such a highly touted prospect now in the fold, the big question is how soon he will get his opportunity to lead the Wolverines’ offense.
Michigan’s Quarterback Battle
Despite Underwood’s immense talent, he is not walking into a starting job without competition. The Wolverines have multiple quarterbacks who will be vying for the role, creating an intense battle leading up to the season.
Michigan added Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene, who brings experience and leadership after playing at the college level. His familiarity with high-pressure situations could give him an early edge.
Sophomore Jadyn Davis, a former highly rated recruit, is also in the mix and has spent time developing in Michigan’s system. Meanwhile, veteran quarterback Davis Warren, who has been part of the program for several seasons, is recovering from a torn ACL and could be a factor if healthy.

The quarterback competition at Michigan will be one of the most closely watched position battles in college football heading into the 2025 season. While some expected Underwood to take a redshirt year or develop behind older players, Lindsey’s statement clarifies that the best player will take the field—whether a freshman or a veteran.
