All You Need To Know About Cam Skattebo’s Parents: Leonard And Becky Skattebo

Cam Skattebo’s journey to becoming one of the most explosive and versatile players in the country began in a tight-knit family with a strong passion for football.

His father, Leonard Skattebo, coached him in his early days, which helped shape his potential. Leonard Skattebo was a former high school athlete at Rio Linda High, and his experience increased Cam’s interest in the game.

“I recognized he was different when he wasn’t even two years old,” Leonard Skattebo said in an interview with Cronkite Sports. “He rides back from the very first time ever riding a bicycle, from the opposite side of the street, standing on the seat. That’s when I knew that he was just a little bit different than everyone else.”

Leonard Skattebo never limited his son to one position. Instead, he welcomed Cam’s multifaceted talent and let him roam free on the field.

“He put me wherever he needed me,” Cam Skattebo explained. “If the quarterback was hurt, he put me in. If a receiver was hurt, he’d put someone else at quarterback to throw me the ball. He got the ball to me in different ways.”

Becky Skattebo, Cam’s mother, has been the family’s steadfast emotional support. She’s a common sight at stadiums, cheering from the sidelines and proudly posting her son’s highlights on social media.

In Becky Skattebo’s presence, those who know the family say, her consistency, love, and encouragement became Cam’s emotional compass for the highs and lows of football life.

Cam Skattebo’s older brother, Leo Jr., also paved the way. While he didn’t achieve the same level of athletic success, Cam Skattebo shared that Leo’s toughness and grind were a huge inspiration for him.

“Just seeing him keep grinding,” Cam Skattebo said. “Knowing he didn’t have the athletic ability or the body that he wanted to be able to compete, but still grinding every day. He taught me a lot and taught me how to keep pushing.”

At Rio Linda High, Cam Skattebo made headlines with impressive stats like 3,550 yards rushing and 42 touchdowns in one season. His powerhouse junior year gave the team a CIF Division 5-AA state championship and recognized him as California’s Small School Player of the Year.

Even with his astronomical stats, major college programs didn’t initially give him a shot. He ended up at Sacramento State, an FCS institution, and excelled immediately.

During 2021, he ran for 1,373 yards and was the Big Sky’s Offensive Player of the Year. The strength, vision and football smarts that Leonard Skattebo instilled paid huge dividends, and his play put him on the map.
