Why Wasn’t Paige Shivers Fired By Michigan? All We Know About Universities’ Rules Amid Sherrone Moore Scandal

The dismissal of Sherrone Moore as Michigan Wolverines head coach on December 10 stemmed from an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member that he never disclosed to university officials.

However, the staff member involved, later identified as Paige Shivers, continues to retain her position at the university. Michigan confirmed on December 15 that Shivers continues to remain employed despite her alleged relationship with the former head coach.

This has raised questions about consistency in how Michigan handles workplace relationships. However, the answer to this question lies in Policy No. 201.97 pertaining to supervisor-employee relationships at Michigan.

Under this policy, supervisors bear full responsibility for disclosing intimate relationships with anyone they supervise, with the policy stating that a supervisor cannot initiate or attempt to initiate such a relationship with a supervisee.

Moore violated this policy in two critical ways, as he first allegedly entered into a relationship with someone under his authority, whilst also failing to report it to university officials despite the guidelines.

“Recognizing that Intimate Relationships exist or may develop in the workplace that are not initiated by a Supervisor and are free from coercion and abuse of power, immediate disclosure of the relationship by the Supervisor is required”, states the policy

Failure of the Supervisor to disclose an Intimate Relationship is a serious offense and cause for discipline, up to and including dismissal from employment. Although encouraged, Supervisees have no obligation to disclose,” the policy further highlights

This policy places the burden of disclosing the relationship on the person with power, which in this case would be Moore. It also states that the supervisees face no obligation of disclosing the relationship.

Insider Says Sherrone Moore Situation Was a “Poorly Kept Secret” Within Program

Whilst there are new developments pertaining to the Sherrone Moore scandal every single moment, some sources suggest that the entire situation was a “poorly kept secret.

Insider Tony Garcia, during his recent appearance on the sports reporters podcast, revealed how Moore and Paige’s relationship was not exactly concealed, stating how people in the athletic department knew about it.

I’ve spoken to a number of people in and around the athletic department, some who are currently there and in the university, some who are formerly there, and it’s sort of been characterized as a a poorly kept secret,” Garcia stated on the show (11:58)

Garcia also stated how he had heard some whispers and rumblings about the scandal over the past couple of months, whilst also trying to understand the situation as best he could over the past few weeks and months.
